At the intersection of N. Cedros Avenue and E. Cliff Street in Solana Beach, there’s a sculpture that turns with the wind and catches the light in a way that stops people mid-stride. Its name is "Pinion", and it’s more than just a piece of metal reaching skyward—it's a symbol of transformation, movement, and the enduring rhythm between nature and steel.
"Pinion" was born from a simple but powerful image that had long inspired me: the flight feather of a bird’s wing—the pinion feather. In birds, that feather is responsible for the control and direction of flight, a quiet but crucial guide. I was fascinated by the elegance of that function: how something so delicate could wield such influence over the movement of a living body through space.
